Lots of Money in the OC School Board Races

The OC Board of Education has three seats up for grabs and various groups have allocated large sums of money to fund the campaigns.

District 1 has Rebecca “Beckie” Gomez and Paul Zive running against incumbent and conservative Robert M. Hammond.

In District 3, incumbent Ken L. Williams is being challenged by Michael Parham and Margaret Brown.

Incumbent John “Jack” Bedell is seeking reelection in District 4 against Chris Norby and Zonya Marcenaro-Townsend.

Districts 1 and 3 are very interesting in terms of campaign financing.  Two large groups, The Orange County Charter Advocates for Great Public Schools and The Teachers for Local Control have each raised more than $100,000 to help elect their preferred candidates. The OC Charter Advocates are supporting incumbents Hammond and Williams, while The Teachers for Local Control are supporting challengers Gomez and Parham.

Hammond faced scrutiny earlier this year by LGBT organizations over some homophobic comments he made. The groups went so far as to call for his resignation.
