Manteca Unified School Board Appoints Superintendent

The Manteca Unified School Board has appointed Dr. Clark Burke to lead the district. Dr. Burke has served as interim Superintendent since May 30, two weeks after previous Superintendent Jason Messer announced his resignation.

The Board chose Burke because he has successfully involved all stakeholders throughout the past 6 years in the District as he continues to support innovative and original thinking in public education.

Dr. Burke is a product of the University of California and the California State University school systems. Having attended UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, and CSU Sacramento, Dr. Burke earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s Degree in Education, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Prior to serving the Manteca Unified School District, Dr. Burke was the Director of Human Resources at Eureka Union, an Elementary School Principal at Elk Grove Unified, a High School Vice Principal at Antioch Unified, and a Middle School Science Teacher at Woodland Joint Unified.

“Dr. Burke brings over two decades of experience both in private and public education to this role and a drive to continue to work hand-in-hand with our staff, parents, and community as we continue to move forward,” stated Board President Stephen J. Schluer.

As Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Burke ensured, managed, and maintained seamless and continual District day to day operations. He has provided assistance and direction to District wide administration and staff as well as directly overseeing District Cabinet, Certificated and Classified Personnel Services, Operations, Transportation, Maintenance, Grounds, Facilities, Informational Technology, and Nutrition Education Departments. Dr. Burke has also served as the District spokesperson during negotiations. He develops, maintains, supervises, coordinates, and revises District policies and procedures as required. Daily, Dr. Burke has collaborated with city officials including: City Planners, City Managers, Law Enforcement and Fire Agencies.

In addition to his leadership experience in education, Dr. Burke is a Field Grade United States Army Officer. His bio includes, but not limited to three different Company Commands, Battalion and Brigade Staff Officer, Deployments in support of Operation Iraqi and Enduring Freedom experience, and a military education through the completion of Command and General Staff College.

This appointment as superintendent will allow the Board to properly evaluate progress toward the goals established in January for the 2018-2019 school year.
