SAMO High Community Mourns Passing of Angels Pitcher Tyler Skaggs
Students and alumni of Santa Monica High School are mourning the loss of 27-year-old Anaheim Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, a SAMOHI graduate and the son of one of its longtime PE teachers and coaches, Debbie Skaggs. The MLB pitcher was found unresponsive in his Texas hotel room before the team was set to play the Texas Rangers Monday. A cause of death has not yet been determined.
Skaggs was born in Woodland Hills and attended L.A.-area schools, becoming a pitcher for SAMOHI. He was drafted by the Angels in 2009 and traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010 before returning to Anaheim in 2013.
L.A. Times sportswriter Eric Sondheimer recalled Skaggs fondly from high school.
“I will remember the smile and spirit he always showed during his Santa Monica High days. The beach, the ocean, the air — it helps creates a personality that people want to embrace.”
Students, alumni, and public officials also reacted to the loss of one of their own on Twitter Monday.
