Racist Tweets Against Salinas High School Coach Were a Prank, Authorities Say

A hate-filled tweet against a Salinas high school coach was a hoax, school and police officials say. But especially in the current social and political climate, it’s no laughing matter.

The post originated from a Twitter profile which declared “I love Hitler and Donald Trump.” It had a picture of a coach from Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas with the words “I hate black people” and an expletive.

After an investigation, that Twitter profile was determined to be fake according to the Californian. The students who made it — evidently in jest — were tracked down and confessed.

“We want to stress to parents that there was no threat made and there is no reason for your children to feel unsafe attending the first day of school,” Alvarez Principal Joseph MacDonald said in a statement.

Both MacDonald and the police thanked the parents who discovered the posting and brought it to the attention of school officials.

No criminal charges have been filed. The school has not revealed whether or not the students who created the account have been disciplined.
