Asian Student Says He Was Singled Out for Coughing Amid Coronavirus Fears
The novel coronavirus that first emerged in Wuhan, China seems to be on everyone’s mind lately. With that concern have come accusations of Xenophobia.
Among them is a student at Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood who was sent home for coughing in class. He says he believes he was singled out because he’s Asian.
Dylan Muriano says he wasn’t the only student coughing in class that day.
"I asked [the teacher] if he sent me out because I was Asian and he responded with nothing," Muriano told Fox LA. "He looked me in the eye and didn't say anything after that. Just left me alone and wouldn't say anything."
When Muriano returned to class, he says he was teased about the coronavirus by his peers.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is looking into Muriano’s claims.
“LAUSD remains committed to the safety and well-being of all students and does not condone violence or intolerance of any kind," the district said in a statement.
1,100 people have died and 45,000 have been sickened from the coronavirus worldwide since December. California has seen a total of 7 cases.
