Physical fitness tests at California schools could become a thing of the past under a proposal from Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Newsom has proposed scrapping the physical agility exams—which include timed 1-mile runs, pull-ups, and body mass index measurements—for a period of three years. The governor is concerned that they promote body shaming and bullying and that they discriminate against non-binary students.
The tests are currently required for those in the 5th, 7th and 9th grades. Students with disabilities are exempt.
