Newsom Says Schools Could Stay Closed for the Rest of the Year

In a sobering update on the coronavirus Tuesday, Governor Gavin Newsom told parents and educators to prepare for schools to be closed for the remainder of the school year.

“I need to be honest and transparent with you,” he said. “Don’t anticipate schools are going to open in a week. Please don’t anticipate in a few weeks. I would plan and assume it’s unlikely that many of these schools, few, if any, will open before the summer break."

It was an unpleasant but not all too surprising message, given the experts’ projections. The latest models show that social distancing would need to continue for months to ensure the healthcare system is not overwhelmed.

Newsom did add that campuses could be converted into daycare facilities for low-income children and children whose families must be at work. The logistics would be difficult. Details are expected in the coming days.
