State board of education welcomes three new members

Three new members joined the State Board of Education last week. Governor Gavin Newsom named Cynthia Glover Woods, James McQuillen and Haydee Rodriguez to the Board July 6. They took their seats two days later.

Glover Woods is the chief academic officer at the Riverside County Office of Education — a position she has held since 2016. She also chairs the Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee of the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association and is a member of the California Association of African American Superintendents.

James McQuillen is the education director for the Yurok Tribe in Northern California. He's a licensed marriage and family therapist and works as an adjunct professor at Humboldt State University.

Rodriguez has been teaching bilingual education at Central Union High School in El Centro for the past 22 years. She was appointed to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing in 2014. She chaired its Educator Preparation Committee.
