Westminster School Board President Resigns. Could Board President Be Next?
A Westminster School District trustee has resigned amid allegations that he lied about his physical residency.
Former school board director Xavier Nguyen is facing three felony charges that were filed by the county’s district attorney last month. Nguyen stepped down on Aug. 13. The district has 60 days to decide whether to fill his seat by appointment or special election.
The seat is being vacated at a sensitive moment. Two other seats on the school board are in play this November and one of the campaigns has been marked by similar controversy.
Area 1 trustee and board president Frances Nguyen, who is up for re-election in November, is accused of re-registering her address in an area that actually falls outside her district.
“The records also show that days before the county’s Aug. 7 filing deadline for elected office candidates, Nguyen registered again to vote at an address falling back within the appropriate district boundaries, though critics point out she may have vacated her seat under state law once she registered at an address in the wrong jurisdiction while still participating in board meetings,” according to Voice of OC.
Nguyen told the publication that she currently lives in the correct district. Her critics say the damage has been done and that she should resign.
Some observers who spoke to Voice of OC said the two November contests plus the resignation of Xavier Nguyen could be an opportunity to bring fresh perspectives and wider representation to the board.
