Brooks Allen Selected as Board of Education Executive Director

Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed Brooks Allen as the next executive director of the State Board of Education and as an education policy advisor. Allen is the current superintendent and legal counsel for the Marin County Office of Education. He will replace Karen Stapf Walters, who left to head the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association.

Allen previously worked as an attorney for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area and the ACLU Foundation of Southern California. He also previously served as vice president of policy and legal affairs at the nonprofit Common Sense Kids Action.

“Brooks is a problem-solver and a relationship-builder — key attributes in an executive director. I look forward to working with him as we continue to develop a system that is responsive to the needs of all students and especially those furthest from opportunity,” State Board of Education President Linda Darling-Hammond said in a statement.
