Some Community Members Urge OC Schools to Postpone Reopenings
Some Orange County schools are facing calls to delay planned reopenings, Voice of OC reports.
The Irvine Unified School District is set to resume in-person learning this week under a hybrid model that also offers distance learning options. But a letter from Irvine teachers, signed by over 2,000 people, urges them to wait. The letter takes issue with class sizes of up to 30 students and the lack of a testing and tracing regime.
Petitions have also been going around at Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Garden Grove Unified has already postponed reopening plans.
Annie Brown, the public information officer for Irvine Unified, said her district will not be deterred. She explained the virtual classroom model is simply not working for many parents and that a downward trend in coronavirus cases in the county make in-person learning adequately safe to move forward.
