CalPERS CEO Retires

Anne Stausboll has announced that she is retiring June 30 as chief executive of the nation’s largest public pension fund.

“I’m really ready to explore the next chapter of my life,” she said in an interview.

Stausboll became the CEO for CalPERS in January 2009, and had to immediately handle the effects of the 2008 market crash while simultaneously managing the bribery scandal her predecessor, Fred Buenrostro, was a part of.

“It was definitely a time of turmoil,” Stausboll said. “It was a challenge. I think we’ve really landed in a good place.”

CalPERS lost billions of dollars during the market crash and has since recovered, but still remains under-funded.
