UPDATE: Single-Room School Stays Open

The one-room schoolhouse that was facing closure in Petaluma has been saved.

Three more students were enrolled this month, meeting the minimum requirements for the school to remain open.

Union School would have had to close its doors this year if an additional student was not enrolled.

After large efforts from the community to advertise the school to outsiders occurred, an excess number of requests form families was had, forcing the principal to have to close enrollment.

Two of the additional three students are in the first and second grade, ensuring the school will remain open for a few more additional years.

There are now three one-room schools in Sonoma County and three in Marin County, including the 120- year old Union School.
