High School Basketball Court Collapses

A basketball court at a Los Angeles County high school has fallen into itself.

Linda Esperanza Marquez High School in Huntington Park will have the pavement fixed after a large circular portion collapsed.

Los Angeles Unified School District officials were quick to point out that it is not a sinkhole.

"The most important thing to point out is this is not a sinkhole. A sinkhole implies that there’s some unknown factor and you don’t know how far it’s going to go," said LAUSD Chief Facility Executive Mark Hovatter. “We know exactly what this is, and how far it can go.

Officials noticed a crack in the pavement earlier this year and immediately closed off the area. This week, their fears came to fruition as the "man-made water collection basin" folded.

The estimated time for repairs is not currently known.
