LAUSD Names Interim Chief of Police

A 22-year female veteran of the Los Angeles School Police Department has been selected as its interim chief of police. Deputy Chief Leslie Ramirez will replace Todd Chamberlain, who resigned after the school district approved massive cuts to the department’s budget.

“In good conscience, and in fear for safety and well-being of those I serve, I cannot support modifications to my position, the organization and most importantly, the community (students, staff and families) that I believe will be detrimental and potentially life-threatening," Chamberlain said.

Ramirez attended Hamilton High School in the district. She joined the school’s police force in 1991. As chief, she will have to oversee the elimination of up to 65 officers.
