Sonoma Valley Unified Dismisses Superintendent

It was abrupt and unanimous, and came with very little information.

On Tuesday, the Sonoma Valley Unified School Board voted to dismiss Superintendent Socorro Shiels, effective immediately.

The 5-0 vote took place during a closed session. Shiels did not attend the public meeting held thereafter. Associate Superintendent Bruce Abbott has assumed Shiels’ duties while the district searches for a permanent replacement.

Shield was hired in 2018 after a two-year stint as Education Director for the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence. She had previously headed Santa Rosa City Schools. The reason for her dismissal has not been disclosed.
