Emotional Video of Santa Ana High Schooler’s Harvard Acceptance Goes Viral

Video of a Santa Ana High School student learning of her acceptance to Harvard University was shared many times over the Christmas holiday as a token of hope and inspiration.

Cielo Echegoyen’s story is an incredible one. She was diagnosed with a progressive tissue disease at a young age. That, combined with family history of cancer, led her to pursue a career in medicine. In the fall, she will study molecular and cellular biology at one of the top universities in the country, where acceptance rates are only about 5%.

Echegoyen hasn't just suffered medical hardship. Her family has suffered social and economic setbacks as well. Her mother is a seamstress who is currently injured and her father was detained by immigration a few years ago. All of it has taught Echegoyen an important lesson she wishes to share with other young people who aren’t necessarily from wealthy families.

“If you are confident in yourself, if you’re confident in your capabilities… everything’s possible.”
