Coachella Valley Unified Superintendent Resigns
Coachella Valley Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Maria Gandera has resigned. She stepped down on Feb 4, citing a desire to spend more time with family. Dr. Steve Kennedy was selected as the interim schools chief.
Gandera was appointed to the role in June 2019, becoming the district’s first Latina superintendent. She was previously the director of Human Resources.
As KESQ reports, CVUSD has recently faced some challenges ranging from bus safety issues to a failed bond measure, pandemic-led school closures, and employee scandals. On the day Gandera resigned, CVUSD also announced that its security director had been placed on administration leave following his arrest for suspected solicitation of prostitution.
