Long Beach Students Will Head Back to Classrooms Next Month
The Long Beach Unified School District plans to resume in-person learning for elementary students on March 29. Last week’s announcement makes LBUSD the largest school district to announce reopening plans, according to EdSource.
Unlike the majority of cities in LA County, Long Beach has its own public health department. The city prioritized teacher vaccinations very early on. All elementary school teachers are expected to be fully vaccinated by the March 29 re-opening date.
It’s not clear what the situation will look like on the student side. Superintendent Baker has said that half of parents wish to continue virtual learning instead of sending their children back to school. That option will be available, as LBUSD is pursuing a hybrid learning model.
In addition to the March 29 resumption for elementary learning, Long Beach middle schools are set to resume on April 20. High schoolers could come back as soon as April 19-26.
