Mark Luque Appointed Superintendent of Bakersfield City Schools

As CalSchoolNews noted last week, Bakersfield City School District Superintendent (BCSD) Doc Ervin has been chosen to head San Bernardino City Schools this summer. Now, we know who will replace him.

BCSD Deputy Superintendent Mark Luque was promoted to chief of schools Tuesday night. The vote was 4-1.

Luque attended BCSD schools in elementary school and junior high. He has more than 20 years of education experience and has been with the district since 2015, when he took a job as director of curriculum and standards. He previously served as Assistant Superintendent of the Delano Union School District.

“I am honored to be appointed as Superintendent of the Bakersfield City School District. I am excited to work with our board, staff, and community to provide our students with a world-class education?” Luque said. “I look forward to continuing the District’s legacy of educational excellence, which helped shape my life and landed me where I am today."

Ervin said the district had made an outstanding choice in Luque as his replacement.
