Assembly Bill 520 Aims to Diversify Teacher Workforce
School districts would receive $15 million to help diversify their educator workforce under a bill that passed the Assembly Education Committee on Monday.
AB 520, or California Diversifying the Teacher Workforce Grant Program, was authored by Assemblymember Mike Gipson (D-Carson).
Gipson notes that studies show improved student performance when there are more teachers of color. This is particularly true for Black boys and male teachers. According to the California Department of Education, Black males make up just 1% of the teacher workforce. The state’s student body is 75% non-white.
“This demographic mismatch can drive inequities in educational and academic outcomes," said Assemblymember Gipson.
Gipson's bill would sunset on Jan. 1, 2027.
