Davis Joint Unit Unified Superintendent Takes Job in Manhattan Beach

Davis Joint Unified School District (DJUSD) Superintendent Dr. John Bowes is headed to Southern California, having been named the next chief of Manhattan Beach Unified (MBUSD). Bowes is replacing Dr. Mike Matthews who has served as MBUSD Superintendent for 11 years. Bowes’ first day on the job will be August 9, 2021.

"Based on Dr. Bowes' unrivaled track record, it was abundantly clear to the Board that he is the perfect person to lead MBUSD into the future," stated Board President Jen Fenton. "His reputation as both a problem solver and collaborator, as well as his ties to the South Bay, assures that our district will remain at the forefront of excellence. I have no doubt that Dr. Bowes will be embraced by our students, our employees, our parents, and the greater Manhattan Beach community."

Bowes has served in his current position since 2016. He was previously Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and once headed labor relations for LA Unified. Bowes earned his Ed.D. from UCLA and his B.S. degrees in finance and management from Virginia Tech. In 2019, he was named one of the Top 300 Civic Leaders in the Sacramento Region.

MBUSD Superintendent Matthews will remain on the job until Bowes’ start date to ensure a smooth transition.
