Anti-Mask School Board Member Sued by Turlock Unified

The Turlock Unified School District is suing one of its own board members because he won’t wear a mask.

TUSD and its school board have asked a judge to make Jeffrey Cortinas wear a mask at meetings or force him to attend them remotely. A hearing on the matter won’t take place until June 6.

According to legal documents, Cortinas’ mask defiance goes all the way back to 2020. Cortina claimed he couldn’t cover his face for medical reasons. But From August to November 2021, he complied. That compliance ended on Nov. 2, 2021 when Cortina “defiantly got up from his seat, walked over to the trashcan, and threw the mask away,” according to the plaintiffs.

The district says it has a duty to uphold public health orders and could otherwise be fined by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health. Cortina is putting members’ health in jeopardy, the lawsuit claims, and has forced the cancelation of meetings as a result.
