3 Out 4 Children Have Had COVID, Says CDC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report Tuesday which estimates that three out of every four children in the U.S. have been infected with the coronavirus.

The estimate comes from serological studies of more than 200,000 Americans. In examining the blood samples, researchers specifically looked for antibodies produced by infection rather than vaccines.

The samples revealed a significant number of previous infections among adults as well. Among all age groups, signs of previous infection in December were 58%.

Many of the infections among children occurred in the earlier part of this year.

“The percentage of those 17 and under with antibodies rose from about 45% in December to about 75% in February,” according to U.S. News and World Report.

The higher rates of previous infection among children could be due to less rigorous mask use and other precautions, as well as the amount of time they spend in congregate settings.
