School Board Recall Fever Hasn't Broken Just Yet
Momentum for school board recalls is chugging along in 2022, despite a slight decrease since last year.
School boards constituted the highest number of recall petitions in 2022 for the second consecutive year, according to a report from Ballotpedia.
By the middle of 2021, Ballotpedia had tracked 165 recall efforts against 263 officials. In the first half of 2022, Ballotpedia tracked 152 recall efforts against 240 officials. Michigan was the top state for recall efforts for the first half of the year.
In 2019, there were just 72 recall efforts tracked by Ballotpedia. The COVID-19 pandemic was a major impetus behind efforts to oust public officials, particularly in education which was so heavily impacted by lockdowns and the culture wars.
Some of the most high-profile recall elections in the country occurred over the past year in California. These include the recall of three San Francisco school board members in February and the recall of San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin this month.
