Why Is Ginni Thomas Involved in a Contra Costa School Board Race?

A small $250 donation is making big waves in a Contra Costa County school board race. That’s because the donor is Ginni Thomas, the wife of conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and a Trump ally who was a key player in attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

SFist reports that Thomas made the donation to Mark Woolway, one of three conservative candidates running for the Acalanes Union High School District Governing Board. The other candidates on the three-person slate are Renee Nowac and Gabe Ledeen. According to SFist, they’re aligned with another slate for the Lafayette School Board: Sarah Lind, Robb McSorley, and Niels Larsen

Orinda parent and activist Chad Curran, who runs a Facebook group exposing the extreme right, told ABC 7 that Thomas’ donation highlights the Republican Party’s attempted takeover of school boards.

Woolway says that’s preposterous. He claims Thomas’ donation was actually meant for his fellow candidate Gabe Ledeen because Ledeen is a Thomas family friend. Although Woolway served on the Trump presidential transition team, he calls himself a Libertarian and says he did not vote for Trump.

“I'm not a Republican,” he told ABC 7. “I don't identify as a conservative. And I think it's reflective of the lack of willingness to entertain different thoughts. Anyone who comes out with any opinion that may challenge the current board's orthodoxy is labeled a conservative or some kind of right-wing movement, which in my case, couldn't be farther from the truth.”
