LAUSD Cyber Attack Began Earlier Than Previously Thought

Los Angeles Unified’s cyber breach occurred earlier than the public was led to believe according to documents filed with the state.

LAUSD initially claimed the breach occurred over the Labor Day weekend. It has now acknowledged its servers were compromised as early as July 31.

LAUSD attempted to clarify Friday, saying it’s investigation “revealed that the threat actor was engaged in reconnaissance on or about July 31, 2022,” but that “the cyberattack began and ended on Sept. 3, 2022.”

In documents, the district also confirmed the breach exposed confidential information, including social security numbers, for more than 500 people who worked for district contractors.
