Alum Rock School Board School Member Resigns

Alum Rock Union School District Trustee Ernesto Bejarano has resigned from the school board.

“Serving on the Alum Rock school board over the past four plus years has been one of the most challenging and gratifying periods of my life,” Bejarano said in a resignation letter. “I step away knowing in my heart that I did everything in my power to leave this beautiful community better than I found it, and I am content in my belief that I did just that.”

Bejarano was first elected to the board in 2018.

Alum Rock is dealing with fallout from an Adelante Dual Language Academy teacher’s arrest for sexual assault last fall. The teacher is accused of assaulting or molesting at least 10 children under the age of 12. The district has been criticized for a lack of communication and transparency.

Bejarano’s colleagues said they were surprised by his decision

“I want to thank him for contributions to the board,” Trustee Minh Pham told San José Spotlight. “He was a board member (who) always did research. Even when I did not agree with him, I respected his opinions and where they came from.”

Applications for Bejarano’s seat must be in by Feb. 23 at 4 p.m.
