Controversial School Board President Arrested for Second DUI

Val Verde Unified’s school board president can’t stay out of trouble for long. Matthew Pierre Guevara Serafin was arrested last month on suspicion of driving under the influence, the Press Enterprise reports.

This is the 31-year-old’s second DUI. He completed probation for the last one a little more than a year ago. He also has a vandalism charge on his record.

Colleagues are once again calling for Serafin to step down. Members have tried twice to remove him from office without success.

“He negatively represents the Val Verde Unified School District and is not the role model the public demands for our students, staff and community,” said his colleague Melinda Young, whose motion to censure Serafin failed to pass on Sept. 5. “His conduct goes against the morals and values we instill in our children.”

Young was referring, not just to the alleged DUI, but his conduct at board meetings as well.

Trustee Marla Kirkland called Serafin’s behavior “embarrassing.”
