Rocklin Teachers Union Files Complaint Over Trans ‘Outing’ Policy
The Rockland Unified School District recently began requiring staff to notify parents when a student identifies as another gender. Now, the union representing teachers has filed an unfair labor practices charge, claiming the policy violates bargaining rules.
The Rocklin Teachers Professional Association has asked that the Public Employment Relations Board force the district to rescind the policy. RTPA says it places its members in legal jeopardy by forcing them to “out” transgender students in violation of state law and the California Education Code.
The California Teachers Association, which is affiliated with RTPA, agrees.
“The school board’s decision puts our teachers’ credentials in jeopardy,” said CTA board member Mike Patterson.
RTPA says it demanded a chance to bargain over the issue twice before the policy was voted on. RTPA said the school board had an obligation to bargain under the Educational Employment Act.
