Poway Unified Superintendent Placed on Leave
Poway Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim Phelps was placed on paid administrative leave Thursday, following an investigation into alleged bullying and harassment of Del Norte High School students.
PUSD was sued in November by an unnamed Del Norte softball pitcher, “Jane Doe.” Doe alleges that Phelps came after her, and threatened to deny her a seat at graduation, because she felt that Doe and her teammates had not clapped enough for her daughter “J.P.” after an event.
According to the suit, Phelps “made threats aimed at the entire senior softball group that either they admit that they orchestrated a conspiracy to not clap for J.P. at the softball banquet or that [Phelps] would ensure that none of the senior softball players would be allowed to walk at graduation.”
The plaintiff claims Phelps also barred her from participating in any extracurricular activities as punishment.
The district has been investigating the claims for the past three months. The results have not been released. However, PUSD officials said they had “reached a sensitive point in the investigation” that culminated in the decision to place Phelps on leave.
