Where is Orange County Superintendent Al Mijares?

In 2022, Orange County Superintendent Al Mijares thwarted a conservative attempt to boot him from office. But ever since, the Orange County schools chief has been M.I.A.

Shortly after his re-election, Mijares stopped attending school board meetings. He has been on an extended medical leave, which he never formally announced to the public.

According to Voice of OC, it’s been a year since the superintendent attended a school board meeting, and he hasn’t been in the office since August.

Is Mijares ok?

He has reportedly told staff that his lengthy absence is a result of “complications from a medical issue.” He has not issued a public statement in almost a year, but he updated staff on his status last month after people began asking questions.

“I am hopeful to be cleared to resume my responsibilities in August, following an appointment with a trusted physician,” Mijares wrote. “Until then, I know our work is in capable hands.”

Deputy Superintendent Ramon Miramontes assumed Mijares’ duties in March 2023 and is expected to continue for the next four months.
