‘Unknown’ Chemical Leak Sends 18 Coachella Students to the Hospital

Eighteen students were taken to the hospital Wednesday following a suspected chemical leak at Bobby Duke Middle School in Riverside County.

The incident was reported at 11:15 a.m., according to the Riverside County Fire Department. A total of 24 classrooms were impacted.

Nineteen students became ill after inhaling noxious fumes. Most of them were taken to the regional trauma center and monitored for “minor complaints.”

The campus was closed off and hazmat crews were sent in to try to identify the source of the fumes, but they were able to find any leaks.

An investigation into the source of the incident remains ongoing.
