After Arrests, UC San Diego Chancellor Faces Calls to Resign

Around 1,000 protesters gathered Wednesday on the UC San Diego campus to demand the resignation of the school’s chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. The protests were supported by the Ethnic Studies Department, which has also called on the chancellor to step down.

The anger at Khosla stems from the dismantling of a pro-Palestinian encampment from the UC San Diego campus on Monday, which included dozens of arrests.

“Faculty of the Ethnic Studies department at UC San Diego are outraged at the vicious suppression of students by our administration under the leadership of Chancellor Pradeep Khosla,” the department said in a statement. “While the Chancellor wrongly claims that the encampment threatened safety, it was the administration’s response that posed the real threat.”

Around 200 regular faculty members had also signed a statement condemning Monday’s arrests and what they described as a “militarized response” to protest.
