Assemblyman Jose Medina (D-Riverside), who authored the bill, expressed surprise at the governor’s decision. He called the veto a “disservice” to students and “a failure to push back against the racial rhetoric and bullying of Donald Trump."
Federal funding comprised just 8.4% of special education costs in California in 2018-19. Under Biden’s platform, which would have to be adopted by Congress, California schools could get an additional $2.66 billion annually for special education.
